They are testing for the amount of prostate-specific antigen in the blood. PSA levels are usually higher in larger glands like your husband. This test can lead to early discovery and treatment of problems.
There are many types of cancer however. Some grow very slow and would cause no symptoms nor be fatal, while other can spread more quickly. You don’t mention him having any symptoms, so if he is diagnosed with cancer it means it was caught early. Prostate cancer is relatively easy to cure when it is caught early; the fact that it does not express symptoms until later is what can complicate things.

Best wishes to you and your husband.

They are probably testing for PSA (Prostate Specific Antigens) which should be below 4. Above four is a pretty certain indicator of Prostate Cancer.

A man’s prostate makes a hormone called PSA - Prostate Specific Antigen. You can tell something about the health of the prostate by measuring the level of this stuff in the blood. Normally it’s under four. (Four nanograms per milliliter, if you have to know). But if a guy has prostatitis even prostate cancer, the level rises.
So when they check out the prostate physically (and the less said about that the better) and they find it enlarged or hardened or it has bumps on it or something, the next thing they do is a blood test for PSA.
It’s very rare for a man that young to have prostate cancer. I’m guessing it’s something less serious.

He’s got an enlarged prostate. Sorry to hear this. It could simply be infected. Good luck.

Cancer has to be a concern at any age, and if found early it is treatable, and if not, it can be fatal. Ignorance is NOT bliss here.
They’re probably referring to PSA level, the amount of Prostate-specific antigens, proteins produced by the prostate gland. A little is normal, a lot might indicate that some cancer is present. A simple blood test gives the results. If the level is high and the doctor feels an enlargement, the next step is a biopsy. Then treatment, if any, can be discussed.

The PSA levels will be determined to see if action is needed.
